About Me
I'm Wendy Harbour, and I'm the owner of The Joyful Labyrinth, LLC. I live in Minnesota in the United States. I've been passionate about labyrinths for decades, and I love their mystery and beauty. Labyrinths have meant many different things to me over the years -- for meditation, to relieve stress, to better understand my own journeys, to deal with grief, to deepen my spiritual practice and faith, and even to recover from addiction. Over the past few years, I've started sharing my joy about labyrinths with others, and that evolved into The Joyful Labyrinth!
I am a certified labyrinth facilitator through Veriditas, and am pursuing advanced certification. A facilitator ensures everyone can experience labyrinths in a space that is welcoming, respectful, and non-judgmental (learn more here). I am especially interested in creating inclusive, accessible labyrinths for people and groups who may often experience barriers to using labyrinths. It's why I say The Joyful Labyrinth is about "Labyrinth Journeys for Every Body, Every Mind, & Every Path." This includes:
-
People with disabilities and Deaf people (I am fluent in American Sign Language)
-
People of color
-
Those who want to choose between a religious or secular experience
-
"Pop-up labyrinths" in urban areas, like empty lots or parking areas
-
LGBTQIA+/Queer people, including those in transition or coming out
-
People in recovery for any kind of addiction
-
Community activists
-
People who are unhoused, have low incomes, or are experiencing food insecurity
-
Children
-
Seniors, including those with dementia or Alzheimer's
-
Caregivers and people in service-oriented professions
I am part of disability, neurodivergent, Deaf, LGBTQIA+, and Christian communities, but have worked with people from all walks of life, and all religious and political backgrounds. I facilitate labyrinths on a sliding scale, so please contact me if you'd like to learn more about labyrinths for yourself, a group, or an organization.
My background is in education, with a focus on children and adults with disabilities, and I currently direct a national center focused on disability in higher education. I've done hundreds of presentations all over the world, with expertise in improving teaching and learning for diverse learners through Universal Design for Learning.
I have a bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Minnesota, and a Master's and doctorate from Harvard University. My degrees all focused on psychology, policy, disability, and education.
